Nice selection of food and great coffee. Interesting furnishings, but kind of cramped.

Everybody else got the buffet. I got the pressed duck. The salty brown sauce didn't taste like much, but it allowed the flavor of the duck to stand out. Mmmmm, crunchy fatty duck skin. I got a nice big portion too, and it didn't cost much. The won ton soup also went above and beyond. It was packed with high-quality vegetables.

Well, *that* was awkward. The building had no identifying marks, not even a sign saying "enter here." We stumbled onto some kind of repair shop and were directed up the stairs. Upon entering we were waved in the general direction of a corner table. The other two large tables in the room were populated by middle-aged-to elderly ladies. After we had ordered, too late to escape, one of them started tapping silverware on her glass, and they proceeded to have a business meeting while I sat there with two giggly girls. Katie also points out that she was disturbed by the toothpaste dispenser in the bathroom, and by the woman who was in there brushing her teeth. The food was OK, nothing to write home about, but our server was very courteous. My grilled cheese with bacon and tomato was notably insipid. Katie's brother, however, raved about the chili that we brought him.

We only got drinks, saving room for lunch. They had some very yummy-looking baked goods.
|
Very, very good. Very, very expensive. I made the mistake of bribing the kids to behave by promising them dessert, and it was six bucks a pop. Shoulda made them share.
|
Katie usually gets macaroni and cheese. This time it had truffle oil in it. All of the food was excellent. I just wish I could have attended the wine dinner.

I had never been to a Cousins before, but I really liked this place. It seemed better than the other sub places, and didn't have the piped-in stench of Subway (which I happen to like, but puts some off). My meatball sub was good, and Katie's sister said that her tuna sub was one of the best she'd ever had. The Cousins in Plymouth shares its space with a Figaro Pizza, which we shall have to try separately later.

Went to this trendy fusion place for their 2-for-1 sushi night, but when I saw curried lamb stew on the menu I couldn't pass it up. It tasted great, a little on the dry side, and was even better the next day. The flourless chocolate cake was out of this world. |
This picture was taken by Katie's sister using her Nintendo DSi. Katie's mommy used to go there all the time, but hasn't been there in about 25 years. Katie seems to have enjoyed her food. |
Another DSi picture ... |
Food was OK, kind of hit-and-miss. At least I didn't get food poisoning like I did the last time I went there some 25 years ago. Katie kept filching her grandma's baby octopodes, but didn't want to eat the heads for some reason. |
This kitsch-filled greasy spoon is a St. Petersburg landmark. Originally located on the southern tip of the city near the Skyway Bridge, they were forced to relocate further up U.S. 19 after the bridge was rebuilt and the new Interstate system cut off most of their traffic. Online reviewers rave about their breakfasts, and I wish I could too, but on this trip my grits were pretty bad (not to mention the coffee). Grits are important. Don't bother trying to find a website for them. skywayjacks.com takes you to an IMPOSTER in Canada. |
This outdoor smoked fish place is *the* place to go if you're visiting the Tampa Bay area. Unless you don't like fish. If you don't like lots of bones, you can get the wonderful smoked fish spread, unless you don't like pickles. The German potato salad is also worth mentioning. One can also purchase whole or half smoked salmon, mackerel or mullet from the smokehouse on the premises. Bring lots of cash. |
This spin-off of the 105-year-old Cuban restaurant in Ybor City occupies the fourth floor of St. Petersburg's Pier, with panoramic views of the city and the bay. The staff who hosted Katie's grandparents' anniversary party were professional, and the banquet food was excellent. |
Pretty good breakfast; coffee not too much better than Skyway Jack's. |
Another area institution, famous for its hamburgers. Katie's mommy somehow never made it there before, despite having grown up a few miles away. I guess my hamburger *was* good, but the bill was a little shocking. Katie's big-A fish dinner probably didn't help. Surroundings, including a koi pond at the entrance, kind of made it worth it. We'd tried to go the day before but didn't have cash and the ATM inside didn't like my card. Again, bring lots of cash.

This Sloppy Joe's doesn't have the historical aura of the original on Key West (which isn't really the original anyhow). Inside it's just another Florida-themed sports bar with a cool gift shop. One can eat on the deck outside that overlooks the beach, but it was too hot and fly-ey for us. Taken during the very buzzy World Cup final.

We all piled into this nice restaurant on the site of the fancy-shmancy Holiday Inn resort that some of us were staying at. We ordered several different appetizers, all of them good, and shared. Katie hogged up most of the mussels. Mommy hogged up most of the coconut shrimp. The older couples at the two other occupied tables were not amused by the kids' antics.
|
Still waiting for a photo. Katie liked her cheeseburger. Mommy used to get open-faced beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes when she went there over 30 years ago. They were awful. |
Still waiting for a photo. |
There was a Tesla parked outside. That's all I have to say about that.

MOOOOOOO! Sheboyganites just became even more bovine as this buffet opened a few weeks ago. The line to get in stretched out the door, even weeks after the franchise's grand opening, and inside the voracious crowds snapped up the pizzas faster than the staff could replace them. If you're really fast you might be lucky enough to grab the BBQ chicken pizza, or the garlic pizza with lots of butter on it. Must remember to go to the Oostburg location instead next time.
